MLK Day 2023

Published by David Crowley on

As we get ready for a big MLK weekend, including the unveiling of the new Embrace memorial on Boston Common, we wanted to share some of our past MLK activities.

SCI and our AmeriCorps members have been involved in a wide range of MLK programming over our 20 years. This has included large MLK Day of Service projects in Franklin Park, coordinating educational programs at the Boys & Girls Club and hosting inspirational speakers.

We have also partnered with St. John’s Baptist Church to offer a Civil Rights Forum project, whereby youth learned about the Civil Rights movement from those with first-hand experience of it. This included Dr. Bernard Lafayette, who worked closely in the movement with Dr. King, playing a leading role in the early organizing of the Selma Voting Rights Movement. More recently, Dr. Lafayette shared about this experience with Juneteenth Woburn 2022 attendees.

We hope that everyone takes the time to remember, learn, and take action this weekend (and every day!) in memory and honor of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King.

David Crowley founded SCI in Woburn, his hometown, in 2002. Under his leadership, SCI has grown to serve 20 communities in the region while continuing to make a difference in Woburn. Prior to SCI, David was the Executive Director of Boston-based Generations Inc. (now Literations). He has been involved in AmeriCorps since the program began in 2003, and served as the founding Director of the Kentucky Community Service Commission, which oversees the program for the state. David currently serves as Steering Committee Chair for the CHNA 15 regional healthy communities network. David graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Government. Unsure of his long term plans, and after many service activities in college, David set out to do a year of service in rural Kentucky, which began his career in service! In his free time, he enjoys cooking for his family, reading and walking nearby Horn Pond. He also shares his kitchen creations on his food & wine blog, Cooking Chat.
