Make a Difference in Woburn with SCI AmeriCorps!

Published by Leah Mulrenan on

Serving with the SCI AmeriCorps program can be a great way to make a difference in the Woburn community while gaining valuable skills for your future! The SCI AmeriCorps program is now recruiting for three full-time positions serving in Woburn.

The 2022/23 SCI AmeriCorps Members recently wrapped up their year of service by completing Social Capital Youth Projects. Our Members let their creativity shine as they partnered with youth to leave their mark on their respective communities, one of which includes Marie France Santiago’s Impact Mural. Now on view at the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn, the Impact Mural was made in collaboration with multiple generations of “club kids”, current and alumni club members, who wanted to express their appreciation of what the Boys & Girls Club means to each of them.

More creative projects include that of Ashley O’Leary’s Recording Booth Studio at the Woburn Public Library. While supervising the Teen Room over the course of her service term, Ashley noticed how many of the youth possessed musical talents with an interest in the recording arts. Seeking to provide a new resource and creative outlet for youth, Ashley set out on a mission to create the Woburn Public Library’s very first recording booth now installed in the Teen Room. With this new addition to the Woburn Public Library’s wonderful collection of resources, youth can not only find new ideas at their local library but record and offer their own as well.

SCI AmeriCorps positions for the 2023/24 year, starting in early September, are available serving with the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club, the Woburn Public Library and serving directly with SCI. The Member serving at SCI will be playing a key role in projects such as the SCI Youth Pitch Contest, Juneteenth Woburn and the Leaders for an Equitable Tomorrow, which focuses on Youth Mental Health.

An AmeriCorps Member enjoys certain benefits that support them throughout their service year, such as a receiving a living stipend of up to $24,000/yr, a Federal Education Award of up to $6,000+ upon successful completion of service, and student loan forbearance during active service. With a total monetary value of up to $50,000/yr, SCI AmeriCorps Member exclusive benefits also include:

  • SCI Developing Leaders Program – comprehensive professional development in partnership with Merrimack College covering Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Youth Development, Volunteer Management, Community Outreach, and more!
  • Free Enrollment in a Community Engagement course taught by Merrimack College faculty with the option to receive undergraduate or graduate academic credit!
