MLK Day 2023

Published by David Crowley on

As we get ready for a big MLK weekend, including the unveiling of the new Embrace memorial on Boston Common, we wanted to share some of our past MLK activities.

SCI and our AmeriCorps members have been involved in a wide range of MLK programming over our 20 years. This has included large MLK Day of Service projects in Franklin Park, coordinating educational programs at the Boys & Girls Club and hosting inspirational speakers.

We have also partnered with St. John’s Baptist Church to offer a Civil Rights Forum project, whereby youth learned about the Civil Rights movement from those with first-hand experience of it. This included Dr. Bernard Lafayette, who worked closely in the movement with Dr. King, playing a leading role in the early organizing of the Selma Voting Rights Movement. More recently, Dr. Lafayette shared about this experience with Juneteenth Woburn 2022 attendees.

We hope that everyone takes the time to remember, learn, and take action this weekend (and every day!) in memory and honor of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King.
