My AmeriCorps Week Event in Dorchester

Over 20 percent of students in the U.S. are bullied with some frequency, with the same number reporting that they bully others.  1  Bullying – both face-to-face and through electronic media – is associated with depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. As a result of these findings, SCI Dorchester @ DotWell has joined with SCI Milford to create events during AmeriCorps Week to increase awareness of the seriousness of bullying and address how as a community we can provide youth with healthy alternatives to negative behavior.

SCI Dorchester @ DotWell and SCI Milford have received a grant from the Massachusetts Service Alliance to design AmeriCorps Week activities that will highlight how AmeriCorps programs address challenges in their communities.  SCI’s AmeriCorps Week will kick off with My Dorchester Night on May 10, 2010, a night for parents to join their children playing basketball with the Safe City Unity Basketball League at the Dorchester House Multi-Service Center gym.

My Dorchester Night showcases DotWell’s approach to holistic health in its comprehensive approach to bullying, providing a positive activity for youth and their families while introducing community members to resources in the community through a demonstration of the Mydorchester.org website and an exhibition of anti-bullying PSAs created by DotWell Teen Center teens and Peer Leaders.   My Dorchester Night is a free event, open to the public, and all participants will have the opportunity to enter a free raffle for gift certificates to Dorchester businesses.  AmeriCorps members and alumni will speak about their service experiences at the event.

SCI Dorchester’s AmeriCorps Week activities will continue through May 15th with anti-bullying activities at the DotWell Teen Center.  These will include free workshops for teens on healthy relationships with Close to Home and a public service announcement project with the DotWell Teen Center’s IAMM Arts and Multi-Media Program.
