SCI MLK Day of Service Projects

MLK Day of Service Logo

SCI is continuing the tradition of making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a "day on" for service and reflection to honor his legacy. Please consider joining one of the projects we're involved with or find another near you!

SCI and our partners Franklin Park Coalition, Millennium Ten Initiative, and DotWell will work together to help fulfill Dr. King's vision of a beloved community with a Woodland Restoration Event. Volunteers will help remove cat briar from Franklin Park. Cat briar is an invasive vine that strangles the trees in the park. SCI is pleased to have this opportunity through the Massachusetts Service Alliance's 2014 MLK Day Grant. We are looking forward to a great day at Franklin Park... we don't have room or tools for anymore volunteers, but here's a place to find other projects in your area.

Our partners on the South Coast will also be participating in MLK Day of Service events as well. South Coast Serves will celebrate MLK Day with a local middle school in New Bedford. These students will be celebrating this day of service by attending a Teach-In hosted by YouthBuild. YouthBuild is a nonprofit organization that encourages you the unleash their intelligence and positive energy to rebuild their lives and communities. YouthBuild will show the middle schoolers an empowering film titled "A Children's march". The youth will also march from their New Bedford School to GiftsToGive, an organization that help low-income and homeless children have the resources they need to learn. Youth will help organize and repackage "gently-used" clothes, toys, and books at their re-purposing center. These repackaged goods will be able to help those less fortunate in the area.

On the North Shore, our AmeriCorps members at Girls Inc. of Lynn will be hosting their 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. There will be an assortment of projects at various nonprofits throughout the Lynn community. You can register to volunteer at www.lynnmlkday.org by Thursday January 16th. You may sign up to volunteer all day (10 am to 4 pm), a morning shift (10 am to 1 pm), or an afternoon shift (1 pm to 4 pm). All volunteers will meet at Girls Inc. of Lynn located at 50 High Street, and are invited to a light appreciation meal after their shift.

The Massachusetts Service Alliance will be hosting many MLK Day of Service events across the entire state. Find volunteer opportunities in your area, by clicking here
