SCI Awarded MLK Day of Service Grant

"Martin Luther King Day Jr. Day of Service 2014,", Massachusetts Service Alliance (December 2013)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day to most is a federal holiday, but here at SCI, and many other organizations across the country, it is a Day of Service. The Massachusetts Service Alliance awards Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service mini grants to organizations who want to help develop opportunities for people across the Commonwealth. These mini grants are designed to engage others in volunteerism and service during the week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19 – Jan. 25, 2014).  For more info click here!

Initiated by Congress in 1994, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a nationwide effort to transform this holiday into a day of community service, to help solve the nation’s critical needs.

Social Capital Inc. was awarded one of the Day of Service grants by the Massachusetts Service Alliance. One of our partnering organizations, Franklin Park Coalition has been having difficulties with an invasive species harming the trees at Franklin Park. The Woodland Restoration Project volunteers will bundle up and help tackle this problem, and also reflect on the legacy of Dr. King’s promotion of service and social justice. If you’d like to learn more about the details about volunteering on this project in Franklin Park, please email Pareesa Charmchi at pcharmchi@socialcapitalinc.org.

Be sure to check back in a few weeks for more information, and check out our #SCimpact page for other MLK projects in the area! There will be a lot of great Service Day activities taking place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. More can be found at the Massachusetts Service Alliance website, http://www.mass-service.org/. Help fulfill Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community by volunteering on Monday, January 20th!
