SCI AmeriCorps Members celebrate 20th Anniversary, attend festivities at Tufts

On September 12, 2014, the AmeriCorps Program turns 20 and enters its third decade as the leading force in public service and volunteerism in America. In the same tradition of past (and still current) programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and 1940s and the Peace Corps and VISTA programs begun during the 1960s, AmeriCorps is now deeply rooted in American communities with more than 820,000 past members and 80,000 current members serving in local schools and a wide variety of non-profit organizations that are committed to solving real problems like illiteracy, homelessness, hunger, violence against women, job and skill training and more.

Hello - My name is Leah Mulrenan and I am the new Program Manager for SCI. On September 2, 2014 we welcomed our 2014 - 2015 SCI AmeriCorps members. This year we have 25 full-time SCI AmeriCorps members, 20% more than last year. These AmeriCorps members will collectively commit to over 40,800 hours of service in the following communities: Woburn, Dorchester, Lynn, Chelsea, Fall River, Mattapan, Chinatown, Revere, and Lawrence on the AmeriCorps stipend, which is a very modest living allowance of only $1,260 per month (before taxes!).Read more

Chelsea Community Connector (part-time)

SCI is partnering with the Healthy Chelsea Coalition to adapt the SCI web portal tool to help people in Chelsea to eat healthy foods and be physically active as a regular part of everyday life. SCI and the Healthy Chelsea Coalition seek an energetic candidate who will be the primary point-person to create content for Chelsea’s portal, and be recognized throughout the community as the specialist who serves as the “hub” of information about current community resources for healthy living. We are looking for someone who can converse in both Spanish and English. To learn more about the position, download the job description from the link below. The initial deadline to apply has passed, but applications will be taken until the position is filled, so apply ASAP. This position is funded by a grant from the Cabot Charitable Trust. Grant Awarded for Healthy Chelsea Portal

SCI will be developing a web portal to support goals of Healthy Chelsea.

SCI is pleased to announce that we have received a grant of $25,000 from the Cabot Family Charitable Trust to adapt our community web portal to support the goals of the Healthy Chelsea Coalition. We will be hiring a part-time Community Connector to play a key role implementing this grant.

Based in the Community Health Improvement Team of MGH’s Chelsea HealthCare Center, Healthy Chelsea was formed to address the need to promote community wellness, with a focus on improving the environmental and social conditions of Chelsea neighborhoods to make healthy eating and physical activity a daily reality for Chelsea residents. Ultimately, the Coalition aims to reduce obesity and prevent obesity-related diseases.Read more

WorldFest Was a Great Success

On Sunday, May 18 WorldFest took place at the Woburn Public Library. WorldFest is a multicultural festival that encourages individuals to share and learn about different cultures. There were performances, children's activities, food, and a lot of fun at the event.

David Crowley's Interview with Friends of Kevin Radio Show

Earlier this month, SCI President and Founder, David Crowley had a segment on the Friends of Kevin radio show. Friends of Kevin is a networking group that brings together the business, nonprofit, and artistic communities. The Friends of Kevin radio show airs on WSMN in Nashua, NH on Mondays from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm. The show consists of three segments where Kevin interviews guests about their organizations. Mattapan United Stand Against Racism Event

On Friday, April 25 our partners Mattapan United hosted a Stand Against Racism event. This event brought together people within the community for an open forum to discuss the elimination of racism. The youth of Mattapan had their voices and concerns heard at this event. There were performances, presentations, great food, and much more. The Mattapan United Youth Council and those that attended the event made personal pledges against racism. The event was a great turnout and there was amazing discussion on various topics including empathy, colorism, and race in the Media.

Our SCI AmeriCorps member, Amanda at the Lynn Food and Fitness Alliance has been working with her Youth Council on a healthy cornerstore project. She was contacted  by Salud America!, an organization funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and works to reduce obesity among Latino youth. They were interested in hearing about the work her Lynn teens have been doing. 

Amanda's Youth Council members are working hard to promote healthy snacks and make it easier for teens to pick apples over chips.

Amanda Rzepkowski is the SCI AmeriCorps member for Lynn Food and Fitness Alliance. During her service she has recruited teens from Lynn English High School for her Lynn Youth Health Alliance. Their goal is to get store owners to agree to not only offer healthy items, but also display them in a prime location in their store. The teens have been working hard to get the convenience stores close to the high school to provide more healthy alternatives for them. 

5% Day at Whole Foods Market in Woburn

Last Wednesday, January 15th, Whole Foods Market Woburn hosted at 5% Day. On these 5% Day, Whole Foods donates 5% of the day's net sales to a local organization. On January 15th Whole Foods Woburn donated 5% of the day's net sales to Social Capital Inc., they donated $3,517 to SCI! .
