Introducing Our New AmeriCorps Program Manager!

Published by Mary Galia on

The SCI AmeriCorps program welcomed a new manager this August. Phil Gordon, a Woburn native, served in AmeriCorps during the 2018-2019 year and took over as manager in August of 2019. Since he was hired, he has worked hard to recruit and help out new AmeriCorps members for the 2019-2020 year.

As a past AmeriCorps member himself, he has a great understanding of the program and its benefits to the communities our members serve. Phil graduated from Middlebury College in 2011 and has degrees in History & English/American Literature. He has lived in Vermont, New York, and Baltimore with experience in education, real estate, and customer service. A Woburn native, he relocated back to Woburn in late 2017.

Phil decided to join SCI’s AmeriCorps program in early 2019 because he wanted to participate in civic engagement since returning to Woburn in late 2017.

“Seeing the growth of diversity in Woburn through service at the Boys & Girls Club was an important way for me to re-engage with my hometown in a positive manner.”

He was looking for a career change and heard about the chance to serve at the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club in Woburn through SCI AmeriCorps. For him, this local opportunity to help within his community was a key draw to the AmeriCorps program.

As a Youth Leadership Coordinator through SCI AmeriCorps, he had the opportunity to coach in the WBGC Staff/Member high school basketball league along with his other duties. This enabled Phil to connect with a key demographic of diverse male youth that he is very committed to helping. Bonus: Phil’s team won the club championship by knocking off a previously undefeated team in the finals by a blowout!

“Working with SCI directly will allow me to continue to stay engaged & involved in my immediate city, while also helping SCI’s impact grow in surrounding communities and through the AmeriCorps program.
