Join the 2014 WorldFest Steering Committee

WorldFest Attender

WorldFest is a celebration of diversity and is put together each spring by SCI and the YMCA International Learning Center (ILC). The festival is held in front of the Woburn Public Library and is a great event for family and friends. WorldFest is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 18th from 2-5 pm.

WorldFest allows groups and individuals to showcase their different cultures and heritage through art, music, dance, and food. The students of the ILC Leadership Team have been the primary group putting this celebration together each year. The students of the Leadership Team are adult English language learners.

We are recruiting community members interested in working with the ILC student leaders to make WorldFest 2014 a successful event. We would like to have more community members involved and share their creative input.Read more

Martin Luther King Day: A Day on of Service

MLK Day of Service in Lynn

For many people Monday, January 16th 2012 was not just another day off but rather a day on of service.  That day SCI Americorps Members were involved in various Martin Luther King (MLK) Day projects throughout the area.  At the MLK Day of Service in Lynn, volunteers worked on projects at the YMCA and Lynn Shelter Association, while also collecting food, school supplies and winter wear.  Check out the SCI Lynn blog to read more about this event:  http://scilynn.org/taxonomy/term/384.  While on January 17th, the Woburn Youth Council held a night of service and collected canned goods at the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn.  Also in Woburn, AmeriCorps Members held a letter writing campaign for those serving in the armed forces.  A write up on this event can be found at:  http://sciwoburn.org/content/letter-writing-campaign-troops-through-operation-gratitude.  Overall, it's clear that AmeriCorps Members turned this day off into an opportunity for public action and service.

Tweetup Draws About 50 People Face-to-Face

"Tweetup Draws About 50 People Face-to-Face," by Nadine Wandzilak, Woburn Patch
Despite the stormy weather, some 50 people turned out for the first #TweetupWob event. It definitely proved to be a good social capital builder, creating new relationships and enabling some previously online only friends to meet in person. Nice recap by Woburn Patch. Thanks to @BeaconGrille for hosting, and @Thoughtfuleats and @Superathens for helping us put it together!

Bringing Virtual Friends Together with Tweetups

At SCI, we seek to put information on people's screens that encourages them to get out into the community. Thus it should come as no surprise that we are helping to organize some local Tweetups this summer.

Tweetups bring people using Twitter and other social media tools together around a common theme.  For instance, I joined fellow Red Sox fans at the first official #redsoxtweetup earlier this spring.  It was a great time, mingling with fellow fans who enjoy Tweeting about their favorite baseball team and other subjects.  Oh yes, the enjoyment was enhanced when with the help of my 5 year old I Tweeted the correct answer to a quiz question and won a Kevin Youkilis signed bat!
