SCI MLK Day of Service Projects

MLK Day of Service Logo

SCI is continuing the tradition of making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a "day on" for service and reflection to honor his legacy. Please consider joining one of the projects we're involved with or find another near you!

SCI and our partners Franklin Park Coalition, Millennium Ten Initiative, and DotWell will work together to help fulfill Dr. King's vision of a beloved community with a Woodland Restoration Event. Volunteers will help remove cat briar from Franklin Park. Cat briar is an invasive vine that strangles the trees in the park. SCI is pleased to have this opportunity through the Massachusetts Service Alliance's 2014 MLK Day Grant. We are looking forward to a great day at Franklin Park... we don't have room or tools for anymore volunteers, but here's a place to find other projects in your area. Read more

SCI Awarded MLK Day of Service Grant

"Martin Luther King Day Jr. Day of Service 2014,", Massachusetts Service Alliance (December 2013)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day to most is a federal holiday, but here at SCI, and many other organizations across the country, it is a Day of Service. The Massachusetts Service Alliance awards Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service mini grants to organizations who want to help develop opportunities for people across the Commonwealth. These mini grants are designed to engage others in volunteerism and service during the week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19 – Jan. 25, 2014).  For more info click here!

Initiated by Congress in 1994, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a nationwide effort to transform this holiday into a day of community service, to help solve the nation’s critical needs.Read more

8 Community Building Lessons from the Farm

Want to learn some good tips for engaging volunteers and building community at your organization? Perhaps you should spend a morning at a local farm like I did yesterday! We wanted to get better acquainted with Nina and Archie McIntyre after Nina had come to one of our events awhile back. They offered to show us around Wright-Locke Farm (which I'll call "the farm" throughout this post) in nearby Winchester, MA, where they are passionate volunteer leaders. We suspected that there might be practical ways SCI might be able to connect with the farm around volunteer opportunities and some projects we are doing related to healthy food and community building.Read more

Youth propel push toward volunteerism

Today's Boston Globe article "Youth Propel Push Toward Volunteerism", cites further evidence that youth are volunteering in record numbers.  A recent Corporation for National Service study suggests the number of young volunteers has roughly doubled from a year ago. This growing move to serve seems to be one factor laying the groundwork for the increased voter participation among young adults in the recent election.
