"SCI Recruiting Volunteers to Help Seniors With Leaf Raking," by Katie Russo, Woburn Patch

WOBURN - Social Capital Inc. (SCI), a nonprofit organization based in Woburn is currently seeking volunteers for their ongoing project Woburn Volunteers for Seniors. This project will match handicapped and isolated seniors with local volunteers, who will assist them in various outdoor chores such as leaf removal and snow shoveling. Volunteers will also be on call in case of sudden heavy snowfall that, without assistance, could leave many seniors homebound. SCI will collaborate with the Woburn Senior Center and Woburn Council on Aging for the project.Read more

SCI Youth Council Mini-Grants Making a Difference in Local Communities

Three of SCI's youth councils are currently in the process of distributing mini-grants for youth-led community service learning projects in local Massachusettes communities! This successful mini-grant program is funded this year by the OneWorld Boston, a Cummings Foundation affiliate.

SCI provides mini-grants of up to $750 to each youth council and they decide which community projects will be funded based on those who send in applications.

The youth councils are advised by SCI Youth Leadership Coordinators and they instill a community service learning based curriculum with their teen members. The mini-grant program is a great way for the teens on the youth council to learn about the grant-making process and how to affect real change in their communities.

It is also a great opportunity to engage other youth in the community and show them the impact they can make in their community as well as teach them valuable skills such as how to apply for a grant. Read more
