MLK Day of Service

Join SCI's 2015 MLK Day of Service in Franklin Park!

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2015, Social Capital Inc., along with our community partners, will host a volunteer service learning event in Franklin Park with the Franklin Park Coalition. Volunteers will work on woodlands restoration by cleaning the park, as well as reflect on current civil rights issues, the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, and the connection between the two.

Join us at the Franklin Park Clubhouse in the morning for discussions and activities about civil rights issues, past and present. Afterwards we’ll head into the park to help clear invasives that are killing young native trees and do other green improvement projects.

The Franklin Park Coalition, an SCI host partner site, encourages health, wellness, and positive community connections. They run programs year-round, including volunteer days focusing on youth and civic engagement.

Bring a bag lunch and snacks, we’ll have coffee and donuts to start the day.

SCI MLK Day of Service Projects

MLK Day of Service Logo

SCI is continuing the tradition of making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a "day on" for service and reflection to honor his legacy. Please consider joining one of the projects we're involved with or find another near you!

SCI and our partners Franklin Park Coalition, Millennium Ten Initiative, and DotWell will work together to help fulfill Dr. King's vision of a beloved community with a Woodland Restoration Event. Volunteers will help remove cat briar from Franklin Park. Cat briar is an invasive vine that strangles the trees in the park. SCI is pleased to have this opportunity through the Massachusetts Service Alliance's 2014 MLK Day Grant. We are looking forward to a great day at Franklin Park... we don't have room or tools for anymore volunteers, but here's a place to find other projects in your area. Read more

Initiated by Congress in 1994, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a nationwide effort to transform this holiday into a day of community service, to help solve the nation’s critical needs.Read more

South Coast Serves is looking for volunteers to be team leaders and assist 10-20 Middle School students from the Roosevelt Middle School in New Bedford. These students will spend part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day helping out Gifts To Give also located in New Bedford. Gifts to Give is a former textile mill turned warehouse where surplus children's gear is recycled, repurposed, and gifted to children in need.

On December 7th, South Coast Serves will be hosting their Orientation for those who would like to volunteer for the event and help be a positive role model to these young emerging leaders in the New Bedford area. The Day of Service would not occur until MLK Day on Monday, January 20, 2014.
