15th Annual HALT Conference

Ashaad Suarez is performing his spoken word piece "Get with it" on stage.

A Story From SCI AmeriCorps Member Ingrid Olsen:

Every year, Part of the Solution youth council along with several local organizations such as the Lynn Housing Authority, the Lynn Police Department, and the Communities that Care Coalition come together to put on the annual Harmony Among Lynn Teens (HALT) Conference. HALT serves the community by bringing together teens in Lynn to learn about important resources and information.  This year was the 15th annual conference and the theme was “Above the Influence”, not just including substance abuse, but also being above things like bullying, unprotected sex, violence…etc.  Part of the Solution youth council’s goal for HALT was to engage their peers in activities designed to educate, but also have fun celebrating those who choose to be “above the influence.”Read more

SCI Youth Council Mini-Grants Making a Difference in Local Communities

Three of SCI's youth councils are currently in the process of distributing mini-grants for youth-led community service learning projects in local Massachusettes communities! This successful mini-grant program is funded this year by the OneWorld Boston, a Cummings Foundation affiliate.

SCI provides mini-grants of up to $750 to each youth council and they decide which community projects will be funded based on those who send in applications.

The youth councils are advised by SCI Youth Leadership Coordinators and they instill a community service learning based curriculum with their teen members. The mini-grant program is a great way for the teens on the youth council to learn about the grant-making process and how to affect real change in their communities.

It is also a great opportunity to engage other youth in the community and show them the impact they can make in their community as well as teach them valuable skills such as how to apply for a grant. Read more
