SCI partner contributes to successful MLK day of service in Lynn

"MLK Legacy Reflected in Day of Service," by Gayla Cawley, ItemLive.com (January 16, 2017)

In honor of this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 16, the Lynn Community Association organized a day of service event at the Washington Street Baptist Church. Several hundred volunteers showed up to help in a variety of projects, from creating MLK bookmarks for the Lynn Public Library to making bracelets for the United States military. Among the organizations involved was SCI's partner, The Food Project.

The Food Project's youth council, aided by SCI AmeriCorps member Rae Axner, organized a youth-led workshop focusing on racism in today's society. Rae serves as a youth leadership coordinator with the SCI AmeriCorps program - she worked hand in hand with The Food Project's youth council to design and orchestrate the workshop, which provided a space for community conversation and reflection. Right now, the organization's Youth Health Alliance, a group of dedicated high school students from different schools in Lynn, is recruiting for two big projects.

The Healthy Corner Store Project aims to promote the healthy items that corner stores sell and in turn help Lynn residents to make educated healthy choices when shopping at these stores. The Healthy Dining Initiative works to get local restaurants to provide healthy and nutritious dining options to their customers.Read more
