Lynn Teens Promoting Healthier Options in Local Stores

Lynn Teens Promoting Healthier Options in Store
Salud America! (2013)

Our SCI AmeriCorps member, Amanda at the Lynn Food and Fitness Alliance has been working with her Youth Council on a healthy cornerstore project. She was contacted  by Salud America!, an organization funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and works to reduce obesity among Latino youth. They were interested in hearing about the work her Lynn teens have been doing.

Amanda's Youth Council members are working hard to promote healthy snacks and make it easier for teens to pick apples over chips.

2013 Social Capital Priorities and How You Can Help

Giving Garden Community Volunteer Project

Data is the top philanthropy buzzword for 2012 according to one recent article, so I should probably provide some data to encourage you to make a 2012 tax deductible contribution by December 31. We definitely rounded up some impressive data about our impact over the past ten years, as we celebrated our 10th anniversary.  But celebrating our 10th also got us thinking a lot about what we want to accomplish in the next ten years. So I'd like to use my final SCI blog post of the year to tell you about our direction, and ask you to join us as we work on the following priorities:

Extending Our Impact Beyond SCI

social media training

Nonprofit professionals are well aware that sharing information and collaborating with other organizations is important to help sustain the nonprofit sector and the communities we serve, especially since nonprofits are often strapped for resources. At SCI, we may not have extensive financial resources, but we do have quite a bit of knowledge on particular topics that we enjoy sharing with the community at large.

During 2012, SCI offered frequent trainings and presentations on social capital and related topics. These trainings have helped over 300 individuals strengthen their ability to build social capital in their communities.

David Crowley, President and Founder of SCI, moderated a panel on the topic of "Social Capital in Action" at the Associated Grantmakers of Massachusetts annual meeting. Over 80 Massachusetts philanthropists were in attendance, and practical ways to build social capital in communities were generated from this discussion. Read a brief summary from it here.Read more

The Power of Service (By the Numbers)

AmeriCorps member serving

AmeriCorps Opening Day kicks off on November 9 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury. As one of the new AmeriCorps members serving at SCI, I'm well aware that the organization has made a significant impact in local communities since SCI was founded in 2002. But it is interesting to look back at the data over time to see just how big of an impact SCI has made by the numbers. Although it does not tell the complete story, as personal stories are a bit more compelling, it is still worth taking a look at.

Since SCI started:

*105 people have served as an SCI AmeriCorps member

*Trained 1,681 new leaders as "Social Capitalists"

*Recruited 12,988 community volunteers

*Engaged 61,103 residents in civic life

*Generated 238,533 service hours valued at $6.2 million dollars.

As AmeriCorps Opening Day approaches, I look forward to hearing more about the impact this program is having all over the state, and to continue doing my part to make a difference.

10 Year Results and Stories

Wow, it's hard to believe it's been over two months since our 10th Anniversary Social Capitalist Luncheon! One of the great things about it was the chance to gather stories and data from our ten years of community building. Like any big event, getting ready for it was a very busy period; yet it also afforded a nice opportunity to reflect on where we've been and what we've accomplished. I'd intended to post shortly afterward about some of the results we shared with our Luncheon guests...better late than never! Here's a summary of what we've done over the past ten years, by the numbers:Read more

SCI AmeriCorps by the Numbers, Part 1

An SCI AmeriCorps Member, Syed Zaman, working with youth.Happy AmeriCorps Week! This annual week that celebrates and highlights the vital role AmeriCorps members play in communities across America happens to coincide with our preparation for our 10th Anniversary Social Capitalist Luncheon. Therefore, we are in the process of aggregating some of our old AmeriCorps data and stories to share at the event. This is still a work in progress, but we wanted to share a few data points that give an idea of the impact SCI AmeriCorps members have had in the communities we serve:

*105 SCI AmeriCorps members have provided a total of 146,110 hours of service to Massachusetts communities.Read more

YourBrookline & Other Sites Taking Off

I was getting ready for a meeting in Brookline this morning, and thought I'd see what was new on the YourBrookline.org site.  I was pleased to see that roughly nine months after launching the site in partnership with the Brookline Community Foundation, the site seems very lively and showing promise for fulfilling its purpose of connecting community members to opportunities to participate in the community.    Read more
