Boston YMCA Young Professionals Event

On Thursday January 30, the Boston YMCA will host a Young Professionals Event from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at Boston's City Bar. Participants of this event will be able to hear from two of Boston's leading CEO's. The event will feature Hope Aldrich, President and CEO of Eastern Insurance Group and William Parent, President and CEO of Blue Hills Bank. Both of these men will share their three best career moves that landed them where they are today. The Y rented City Bar until 8:30 pm for young professionals to network with one another and the special guests. 

A clothing drive for the YMCA Training, Inc Program will also take place. Clothes must be clean, on hangers (if possible). The program is also accepting shoes, handbags, workbags, any type of accessory and clothing a man or woman would wear to a professional office or to an interview. Please no denim, khakis, or golf shirts. They are often in need of smaller and larger sizes.

Come share your vision for Boston with Mayor elect Marty Walsh! On Saturday January 4, from 3-6 pm, Marty Walsh will be hosting a Youth Inauguration Summit. The event will take place at Roxbury Community College Media Center located at 1234 Columbus Avenue in Roxbury Crossing. The event will be co-moderated by Latoyia Edwards, NECN Anchor and Charlie Rose from City Year. 

There will be refreshments, a meet and greet, special celebrity guest, and an ice cream social. There will also be entertainment by Project Hip-Hop. Project Hip-Hop is a youth led organization, they provide opportunities for young people to work together to gain skills and experience necessary to educated and organize social justice in their schools, communities, and in the broader society.

Volunteer at Center for Families' Family Fun Day

The Center for Families is a family support program that serves families of children ages 0 to 8 in Cambridge. Twice a year the Center for Families hosts Family Fun Days. These are family friendly events that draw anywhere from 200-500 families. The winter Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, January 25th at the Peabody School, located at 70 Rindge Ave in Cambridge. The event includes an abundance of activities including arts and crafts, face painting, an obstacle course, moon bounce, infant area, book giveaway, basketball, and much more. All families in Cambridge with children ages 0-8 are encouraged to attend!

Help Give Parents the Chance to Learn How to Use a Computer

Tech Goes Home classes teach parents about resources that can improve the lives of themselves and their family members. However it is hard for them to concentrate on a computer screen when they have their younger children wanting their attention. 

Come provide child care while their parents learn how to use the Internet! You are able to play with young children, while the parents can work on their computer skills and can concentrate knowing their children are in safe hands! Volunteers would be needed from Tuesday January 14th until Wednesday January 22nd

Volunteer Tax Preparers Needed

The Neighborhood Developers (TND) provides free tax preparation as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site for low-to-moderate income clients. Through hard work and dedication, their team of volunteers served over 1,000 households in 2013, and their client's refund totaled over $1.6 million! On average, the amount received through funds make up about 9% of their client's annual income. 

No experience is necessary, all training will be provided. TND is looking for individuals with a desire to help others and a willingness to learn something new. There are opportunities available at the Downtown Chelsea office, located at 4 Gerrish Ave and at the Revere Public Library, located at 179 Beach Street. Volunteer hours and days are flexible based on your interests and site operation hours. Volunteers would be needed for the tax season, late January until mid April.

Become a Fitness Mentor

Newton Mentoring Alliance Logo

The Newton Mentoring Alliance is looking for fitness mentors to empower youth to try new fitness activities and develop healthy habits. Each month the Newton Mentoring Alliance hosts activities for mentors and mentees focused on fitness such as hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, yoga, and much more.

Mentors are paired in a 1-on-1 relationship with a young person in grades 6-12, as part of a year long program. Mentors commit to meeting with their mentee in the community to participate in fitness activities twice a month for a total of six hours per month.

Training and ongoing support is provided. Monthly group activities and free/discounted events are offered for mentors and mentees.


Volunteer Requirements

  • Drivers License Required
  • Access to a Car
  • Must be at least 20 years old
  • 6 hours per month
  • Orientation and Training

A drivers license is required because of the suburban location in Newton, mentors must have car access.

The Egleston Coalition is hosting a Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting ceremony on Saturday December 7th from 2-4 pm. Some of the activities taking place include, holiday music, caroling, tree lighting, refreshments, a martial arts performance by Shim Gum Do, and much more. The local businesses will be recognized- some have even done festive window displays for the season.

Some of our AmeriCorps members will take the stage. One will wow the audience with a spoken words piece and another will sing some holiday songs. There will be a table for nonprofits, local businesses, and programs to place their materials on, bring your flyers of your organization's upcoming events!
