Children at Mattapan United Back-to-School Jamboree

SCI's newest community partner, Mattapan United, recently celebrated the beginning of a new academic year by hosting a "Back-to-School Community Fabric Jamboree" at the Mattahut Wheelock Community Center on Saturday, September 22. The event featured music, healthy food, resource tables, performances and plenty of kids' activities.

Mattapan United is a grassroots community group. One of SCI's AmeriCorps members, Isaiah Mulligan has been serving the organization. He has launched a new community portal for Mattapan United and was also involved with putting together this community jamboree. Check out press coverage of the event on Boston.com.

5 Important Points of "Engagement Marketing"

You may be asking yourself right now, what is "engagement marketing?' If I had not attended a conference on this topic led by Constant Contact, I would be just as confused as you may possibly be.

Engagement marketing is when a business or organization shares content that their particular target audience wants to hear rather than what the business or organization wants to tell them. Traditional marketing strategies tend to talk at customers rather than speak with them. For example, a business trying to sell a product on their Facebook page may simply post about their products or special offers on them. This strategy does not work as well as trying to build a friendly relationship with a customer first. If the customer likes the experience they have with this particular business, then they may decide to buy a product on their own without feeling forced.Read more

5 Ways Nonprofits Can Build Social Capital...and Boost the Economy!

Last year's National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) report highlighted the link between civic health and lower unemployment figures. The report highlights two aspects of civic health that seem to be particularly important for building community resilience during this difficult economic time: 1) social cohesion, the extent to which citizens trust one another and have a local network of friends, and 2) nonprofit density, that is, the presence of a thriving nonprofit sector.Read more

Summer Highlights

Although it was a bit quiet over the summer at the SCI office, that's not to say that important building social capital work wasn't getting done. In fact, this spring SCI received a grant from the Massachusetts Service Alliance for Volunteer Week allowing us to plant a Giving Garden at the North Suburban YMCA in Woburn. Fresh produce from the garden was harvested throughout the summer by YMCA summer campers, and then given to the food pantry at the Council of Social Concern in Woburn. Food pantries often run dry during the summer, so it was great that the volunteers at the YMCA were able to help them restock their pantry with fresh vegetables from the garden! Check out our album to see photos of volunteers harvesting celery!Read more
