SCI Speaks Up for Healthy Teen Relationships

SCI speaks Up 1On a Saturday in mid-March SCI Youth Councils from Dorchester, Lynn and Woburn came together to discuss community needs and create a plan to help. Youth discussed issues ranging from the economy to homelessness to hunger before eventually deciding to create a "Speak Up! campaign to promote Healthy Teen Relationships.

After deciding on an issue to work on, youth spent the rest of their Saturday planning events andYouth Speak Up 2! projects in their respective communities. Each group of teens mapped out community needs and resources before planning a project that would maximize their impact. Youth Council members used SCI's Project Planning curriculum to create effective events and SCI's Volunteer management tools to recruit participants. Youth were able to create interesting projects for their communities ranging from a community day with performances by local artists and skits to promote discussion about relationships to filming and editing their own public service announcements. Each project was an opportunity for youth to address an issue in their community while building leadership skills that will allow them to keep improving their communities now and in the future. Please take a look at the group's PSAs below.

SCI's Speak Up for Healthy Teen Relationships campaign was sponsored by a Global Youth Service Day Grant from the Massachusetts Service Alliance.
